Another Freebie

So, after my ordeal losing a contact last November during the National Youth Workers Convention, I've ended up switching from gas permeable lenses to soft disposable lenses.

I had just bought a new (unopened) bottle of Boston Conditioning Solution (Original Formula) that is now not useable to me. If you wear gas permeable lenses and want it, it's yours.

Otherwise, I'll take it down to Long's and see if I can return it without a receipt.

Any takers?

Congratulations, Bonus!

This morning is a special occasion for our family.

Today, G-Dub's brother Bonus is getting baptized in his church down in San Diego. The Bonus became a Christian just about three years ago, after years of him seeking truth and many of us praying for him. It's been a joy to see him enjoying the peace and purpose that a relationship with God brings.

Today, he publicly affirms that relationship by being baptized. Their parents will both be in attendance to celebrate, and G-Dub has been asked to pray over him at the service. Pretty cool stuff.

Congratulations, Bonus. I'm proud to be your Sis'.

Home Again

We're back - after five nights of camping in beautiful Yosemite, we (G-Dub, Bonus, and I) have returned to civilization. The weather was gorgeous, the rivers full of melted snow, the air fresh, lightly scented with pine trees and campfires.

Our trip was defined by heavy hiking and enjoying the many waterfalls along the way. This week, I'll be putting up pictures from the more strenuous and picturesque hikes we completed.

Here's a preview:

On the road...

So, there's been a bit of a theme to this blog the past week or so... hiking, moving, going... that's only going to continue as G-Dub and I prepare to enjoy a fabulous vacation while camping in Yosemite this week along with the Bonus!

Don't know if I'll get to the internet before Saturday, but I plan to have lots to blog about when I get back!

We're going to Guatemala!

It's official...

yesterday we bought the flights for our summer mission trip to Guatemala! Yes, I've known that we were definitely going to go, but this step makes the trip more concrete in my mind; it feels more 'real' to me, and I'm more excited than ever!

Participating in the trip will be Gary and myself, my mom, and five students from our youth ministry here at Fair Oaks - Karina, Ariel, Rachelle, Molly, and Bryan.

Over the next month or so I intend to post about the location we will be ministering in and what we will be doing there. But for now, I just had to say... whooooeeeee!

We Are Moving: Be the Church

Recently, I attended Youth Specialties' The CORE training event, which this year was focused on Transformational Youth Ministry. Part of the presentation, much to my pleasure and amusement, consisted of a rather concise expression of my vision for our youth ministry. One section was titled, “Transforming Youth Ministries are Moving…,” and it presented a series of comparisons explaining what we should be moving from, and what we should be moving to. So here, I’d like to present a series of short commentaries on these comparisons. I call the series, “We Are Moving…”

We Are Moving...
From getting kids to come to church
To getting kids to be the church

This is one of my personal soapboxes. The church is not a building, it is a people. The church is not where we go, it is who we are. All of us, as followers of Jesus, are called to live out His teachings, to obey His Word. In short, to be the church. So, of course, it makes sense that we should have the same goal for our students.

But much of youth ministry over the last 50 years has been focused on attractional ministry; that is, creating “fun” programs that students want to come to, then including a short, non-offensive message at the end. This approach works in terms of getting kids to come to church, but it does very little to transform lives. Spiritual growth is a non-issue, because energies are focused on encouraging students to show up. Bigger numbers equal success, regardless of whether students begin to live more like Jesus or not.

I propose that we instead focus ourselves on coming alongside students to encourage their discipleship, their holiness, and their spiritual transformation. Our activities and programs should provide opportunities for our kids to put feet to their faith, to live it out, to be the church. At my church, we are already doing this to a degree, and doing it well. We have Small Group Leaders who are willing to get heir hands dirty in the relational world of teenagers, and service projects that are about more than simply feeling good about ourselves. These are signs of a youth ministry moving in the right direction.

This is why I’m such a huge fan of things like mission trips, youth-led worship services, and 30 Hour Famine. These are events that not only challenge students to live out what the Bible teaches, but provide an opportunity for them to do so. And our kids respond and rise to these challenges. I believe that God has put something special in the kids of Fair Oaks that resonates with service, with prayer, with being the church. We who serve in this ministry ought to thank God for it, and to ask Him to work through us to maximize the wondrous spiritual gifts He has given our students.

So, as we dream together of new ministries and new ideas, let’s commit ourselves to not simply encouraging kids to come to church. Let’s encourage them to be the church.

My Hero

"Now Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators and the satraps by his exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom. At this, the administrators and the satraps tried to find grounds for charges against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs, but they were unable to do so.

They could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent. Finally these men said, "We will never find any basis for charges against this man Daniel unless it has something to do with the law of his God."

Daniel 6:3-5

Wow. I can't read this without stopping to think, 'that's the kind of person I want to be'. Faithful, honest, diligent, uncompromising... innocent of all but loving and serving my God whole-heartedly. Easier said than done, I know, but a challenge I want to live up to.

Daniel's my hero.

Mt. Diablo Hike

Last Saturday, G-Dub and I headed out to our local mountain to get in some hiking before the big trip to Yosemite (don't you think everyone should have a local mountain?). We ended up on a spectacular trail that took us through a gazillion wildflowers up to a scenic peak that looks out over the entire East Bay on one side, and beautiful rolling hills on the other.

Along the way, we encountered a fair amount of wildlife. My favorite was this quail, who played sentry for his lady while she gave herself a dustbath and foraged in the grass. Later on, I was thrilled to capture a pic of a hummingbird at rest - not an easy task.

I thought this would be a nice pic with all the orange wildflowers, but check this out... an unanticipated guest showed up in my 'self-portrait' - can you find him? I'm not sure if you can tell in this small of a pic, but at full size you can see him waving and grinning cheesily.

There's truly nothing like springtime in California!

This Wednesday!

This Wednesday, May 14, the Fair Oaks youth mission team to Guatemala will be having a fundraiser at Chevy's in Pleasant Hill. (For directions, click here)

The team consists of five students and three adults, who will travel to San Pedro de la Laguna, Guatemala, for two weeks this July. (This is the area that was damaged by Hurricane Stan in 2005) We will be working with Pastor Antonio Moxnay to encourage and equip the local church, as well as serve and reach out to the local community.

Please come join our church family to have a great meal together as well as support our student missionaries!

If you don't already have a flyer, please make sure to print and bring the coupon below:

Youth Sunday

This past Sunday, our church had the great blessing of a youth-led worship service!

It was the first time we (Gary and I) ever coordinated such an effort, and a new experience for many in the church as well. Our students did a fantastic job with their various contributions - greeting, leading worship, drama, testimonies, music, serving communion, and even teaching (yeah, we've got a preacher in our junior high class!).

Special thanks to all the adults who willingly gave up their posts for a week and did a great job training their young replacements! My prayer is that the participating students would be affirmed in the abilities God has given them, and that the church body as a whole would be blessed to see God working through the youth. We've certainly received nothing but positive feedback!

Here's a sampling of our student-led worship band - to me they sound nothing short of angelic:

Fabulous Flowers

After a glorious spring day exploring Golden Gate Park with my sweetie, I have a new favorite spot in 'the city' (move over, Samovar): the Conservatory of Flowers. Rarely do I get to see the glory of God on full display, but the creativity and wonder of His creation can be found around every corner in this 100-year-old greenhouse.

The serene atmosphere made me want to stay all day

These flowers are carnivorous!

A rare color combination in nature

Jungle Flowers

These look good enough to eat!
